1. The Aesthetics of Chess, with The Soviet School of Chess.
A. Kotov; M. Yudovich (1961)
This piece is a visual meditation on the elegance and psychological depth of chess, drawing direct inspiration from The Soviet School of Chess and the meticulous logic embedded in Vladimir Nabokov’s compositions. Hand-drawn and textured to evoke a vintage Soviet-era aesthetic, the work layers game analysis with artistic abstraction. The upper diagram reflects Nabokov’s own chess problem, annotated in classic notation, while the lower grid distills the essence of strategy into a minimalist “mate in two” puzzle.

By juxtaposing analytical structure with intuitive mark-making, this design explores the duality of chess as both art and science. It is a quiet homage to the intellectual rigor and creative expression cultivated under the Soviet chess tradition, where the board was not just a battleground, but a canvas.

About

My practice is rooted in systems—visual, political, emotional—and how they intersect through structure, memory, and control. Drawing inspiration from chess theory, Soviet-era design, and personal mythologies, I explore the tension between order and intuition. I am drawn to grids, rules, and coded language, yet I continually subvert them—reframing strategy as story, and logic as intimacy.

Often blending analogue techniques with digital composition, my work moves across media: from hand-drawn schematics and invented documentation, to text-based installations and pseudo-archival visuals. I’m interested in how authority is designed, how nostalgia is weaponized, and how beauty can quietly dismantle both.

A recurring theme in my work is the choreography of decision-making—the “game” behind the gesture. Whether referencing Nabokov’s chess problems, Soviet typographic rigidity, or the personal choices that fracture relationships, I use design as a form of psychological excavation. Every mark carries intent, even if its meaning is deferred.

Ultimately, my work attempts to reconcile structure with feeling—grids with grief, theory with longing. I aim to create quiet provocations that reward close looking and invite viewers to decode, interpret, and feel their way through the space between strategy and soul.
